Women form over 75% of the global health and social care workforce, playing vital roles as doctors, nurses, researchers and industry leaders who deliver compassionate, high-quality.

Despite representing a majority, women in healthcare often encounter gender pay gaps and limited progression into leadership roles. In the UK, for example, women hold 89% of nursing positions but represent only around 25% of senior NHS Board roles, highlighting the challenges that still exist in achieving gender equality at the highest levels of healthcare.

The Essential Role of Women in Healthcare

Women’s influence in healthcare is far-reaching, impacting patients, policy, and innovation. Many women in health bring unique perspectives to patient care, with studies suggesting that female doctors often spend more time with patients and are more likely to provide preventive care. This dedication significantly improves patient outcomes and contributes to higher patient satisfaction.

Beyond clinical roles, women are also leading advancements in medical research and technology. For example, Professor Dame Sally Davies, the UK’s first female Chief Medical Officer, has been instrumental in public health campaigns and spearheading research on antimicrobial resistance.

Progress and the Path Forward

While strides have been made in promoting gender equality, there’s still work to do. Women in healthcare are often underrepresented in leadership and innovation roles, and the gender pay gap remains an ongoing issue. A 2022 NHS report revealed that, on average, female doctors earn 18% less than their male counterparts. Addressing these disparities is crucial to ensuring a healthcare system that is equitable and supportive of its workforce.

On this International Women’s Day, we recognise and celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women in healthcare. Their dedication to improving lives and advancing healthcare paves the way for a healthier, more inclusive world for everyone.
